Paint from Scratch: A one-day studio course in pigment, binder & canvas

A painting is not a picture of an experience – it is an experience. – Mark Rothko
Painting from scratch means starting with the raw materials – dry pigment, binder, surface – and learning to mix, ground and build from there.
These one-day studio courses offer an immersive experience in hands-on painting, using either acrylic or egg tempera. Participants will mix their own paints, prepare surfaces, and explore tools and materials through direct, intuitive work.
Each session begins with a short introduction and technical exploration, then opens into a freer, self-directed process. The focus is not on polished results, but on attention, presence, and experimentation.
The course takes place in my large, light-filled studio surrounded by nature – a quiet space at the edge of the city. A place to step out of routine and into something slower, deeper, more vivid.
No prior experience is needed – the sessions are open to anyone curious to engage with real materials and the act of painting.
All materials are provided, including professional-grade pigments, canvases, tools and binders. Some light snacks and drinks will also be available. Please wear comfortable clothing that can get stained.
At the end of the day, each participant takes home a canvas painting – and maybe something else that can’t be framed.
